Give each scene a deliberate entrance.

A cut introduces the next idea immediately. A color fade creates a brief pause. A dissolve blends two scene views while both keep moving. A wipe reveals the incoming scene from one edge. Choose the transition for the story, then inspect the actual exported file.

Choose the transition on the incoming scene.

  1. Select the scene that comes after the boundary. Open Transition into this scene.
  2. Choose Use color fade to fade through a solid color, or Use dissolve when dissolves are available in your workspace. Choose Use wipe for a directional entrance. All offer durations from 0.2 to 1 second in tenths.
  3. For a color fade, choose its six-digit color. For a wipe, choose Left, Right, Up or Down; the labels explain which edge reveals the incoming picture. For a dissolve or wipe, review the new total length: two two-second scenes with a 0.6-second dissolve make a 3.4-second video.
  4. Play from the preceding scene. Pause and use Preview position to inspect the middle of the transition. Use Use a cut to remove it; Undo restores the setting.
  5. Save a new version, export, and watch the completed MP4. An earlier review decision does not approve this new file.

The first scene has no incoming boundary. Its retained transition is ignored there and takes effect when moved later. Splitting adds a cut between the halves, keeping the action continuous and total length intact when the resulting scene windows fit.

Keep text and sound in step with the story.

A color fade keeps the existing timeline. A dissolve or wipe overlaps scene durations and makes the video shorter. Source trim offsets and scene-relative graphics stay with their scenes. Narration, music and timed caption timestamps stay fixed on the video clock; they are not automatically retimed.

After adding, removing or reordering a dissolve or wipe, check when each caption and sound meets the picture. A caption extending beyond the new end blocks saving until you deliberately correct it. The editor keeps your wording. Global captions remain above the transition, while scene text and graphics move with their scene views through the transition. Avoid placing two different dense text blocks at the same position during the overlap; use a separate timed caption when a line needs to stay readable throughout.

Leave room on both sides.

Each scene must have enough time for its incoming and outgoing transition windows. A dissolve or wipe uses its full duration on each adjacent scene; a color fade uses half. When a dissolve or wipe is involved, leave at least 0.1 second beyond those windows. If the editor says a scene is too short, shorten a transition or lengthen that scene within its source footage.

Dissolve and wipe exports currently allow at most 12 scenes and 60 seconds at 720p, or 30 seconds at 1080p when that resolution is available. Both export H.264 at 30 fps. Videos using only cuts or color fades retain the standard two-minute 720p or one-minute 1080p limits. This is a bounded scene transition workflow; it does not include 4K, transition packs or a general motion-effects timeline.

If a feature is temporarily unavailable, its saved settings remain visible. Switch the effective transition to a cut and save a new version to export, or try again later. Removing a capability does not rewrite your saved work.

Start with footage you have permission to use.

Trim and frame your own footage, time a simple callout, or edit the caption track. Private originals stay in your workspace. Watch the final file and check its rights before sharing outside it.
